“Faith is the origin of flight.”
Thanya Lakmini

My name is Thanya.
I’m the child of immigrants. I have grown up in Canada. I’m deciphering all the identities that come with being a mixed-race* minority** on colonized land. I have big thoughts and ideas. A history with some hard edges.
I ask lots of questions – watching movies with me is excruciating (says my husband, ha!). I am a speech-language pathologist turned health equity specialist turned writer, learning how to be an ally and an advocate. Science and study have allowed me a career doing what I love: encouraging people to find their voice. Yoga and meditation are helping me reawaken mine.
I’m in recovery from perfectionist thinking, in all its insidious forms. I am learning to trust my body and recover from diet culture, sexual trauma, and shame. I am learning to cultivate my intuition through rest and decolonization. I am stepping into my power by speaking up about the things I believe in: eradicating systems of hierarchy that dehumanize people and result in racism, disability injustice, poverty and environmental destruction.
I think we can build inclusion for all by dismantling the walls that divide us. I will dig deeper to understand you, and the systems that were built to separate us. We are both the wave and the ocean, after all.
*but there’s no such thing as race! Unlearn with me.
**in Canada…but part of the global majority – an empowering (slash sobering) perspective shift!
